You’ve just demolished and rebuilt your kitchen, bathroom, or installed new windows. What is next? The finishing touches, of course. Paint is an important finishing touch when completing any home renovation project- including window and door installations! It is not the most costly aspect of remodeling, but it serves as a clincher and completes the look. When beginning a painting project there are many things to consider, particularly the weather!
Below are some simple, yet important, things to consider when deciding to paint:
Extreme temperatures aren’t the best time to paint. Check the weather forecast before beginning any projects.
Extreme heat causes problems with drying paint by evaporating moisture too quickly. This can cause blisters, cracking and other imperfections.
Extreme cold also creates problems with drying properly because moisture inside the paint can freeze before it cures completely.
A good rule of thumb is to make sure the temperature will keep above 50 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 48 hours after you’ve finished painting. Yet, check with the manufacturer to see if the brand you chose is formulated for lower temperatures.
As you’d expect, painting in high-humidity increases drying time by introducing moisture into the paint. Humid conditions also hurt the adhesion to wood surfaces because the moisture can be absorbed into the wood, causing bubbling or peeling.
Condensation occurs on the surface when high humidity is combined with low temperatures. This creates more difficulties with paint drying and adhesion, which compromises its protective qualities.
In some cases, humidity can cause surfactant leaching, also known as streaking or weeping, which results in a white or brown discoloration on the surface.
Now that you’ve learned a bit, it’s time to take a good look at your own home and make an informed decision. Does your home need a facelift?
Visualize how your house would look from the outside, and go inside and do the same! Then, you’ll be ready to start on your remodeling journey.
