Safety Tips to Minimize the Amount of Lead in Your Home
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 250,000 children have unhealthy levels of lead in their blood. This is due to lead exposure found in paint in homes built before 1978. If you are remodeling a home with lead paint, you should hire an EPA Lead-Safe Certified firm. A Lead-Safe Certified contractor will:
- Create barriers between living/play areas and lead sources. They will close and lock doors to keep children away from chipping or peeling paint. They can also apply temporary barriers such as contact paper or duct tape to block access.
- Wet-mop floors and wet-wipe window components to remove dust.
There are also some things you can do to help ensure your children’s safety (even if you are not remodeling your home). You can:
- Wash children’s hands and toys frequently to keep them free of lead dust.
- Prevent children from playing in bare soil. Soil is also a source of lead. You should also cover soil with grass, wood chips, etc. One other solution: a sandbox.
