Home Remodeling Tips from the Experts
Tips for Remodeling Your Kitchen
Renovating your kitchen is a major task. There are lots of decisions that need to be made. But here are a few quick tips to keep in mind, if possible.
- Position the sink between the refrigerator and cooktop. Those are the two appliances used most often. Of course, you have to factor in pre-existing plumbing lines.
- Counterspace is critical. Much of your prep work will be done on the counters. Ideally, you will have at least 36 inches of space to the right and 30 inches to the left of the range and sink if possible.
- Separate your tall refrigerator and built-in wall oven. It is tempting to put these together, especially since items can go straight from the fridge into the oven. But each needs its own landing space on both sides of the appliance for safety.
- Utilize lazy Susans. They make potentially wasted corners functional.
- Use pull out draws instead of conventional cabinets. They are much more convenient. If you are retrofitting existing cabinets, consider installing pull out trays.

Things to Consider When Remodeling Your Bathroom
Complete bathroom remodeling projects are major undertakings. Here are a few of the many things you might want to consider when planning your project.
- Go green. There are several things you can do in your bathroom to protect the environment. Just a few: low-flow toilets; energy-efficient lighting; locally sourced materials that leave less of a carbon footprint.
- Utilize technology. There are many cool things you can do in your bathroom utilizing the latest and greatest technology. These range from installing heated floors and towel warmers to touchpads that control lighting to even installing video monitors.
- Consider aging factors. Think about not just your needs today, but about your needs as you get older. You might want to have your sinks and toilets installed a little higher so it will be easier for you to use them as you age. You might also want to consider a walk-in shower, as opposed to a bath you would have to step into.
- Leave plenty of room for storage. You want to have easy access to towels and toiletries. And, as you age, you might want to factor in the height of the drawers, cabinets and closets in which they will be stored.

Get the Most Out of Your Exterior Home Renovation
Renovating the exterior of your home can add to the curb appeal and thus increase the value of your home, as well as make your home more energy efficient and save on energy costs. Consider the following when planning your home exterior renovations.
- Make the entry attractive. Get a new front door or refinish the existing door. Add a brass door knocker. Put pots or baskets of blooming annuals on the porch or doorstep.
- Install an ice shield under the roof. It prevents leaking and eliminates the need to shovel snow off the roof.
- Install energy-efficient windows. Energy-efficient windows keep the heat out during summer and the cold out during winter. That results in lower energy costs.
- Consider prestained cement siding, such as James Hardie®️ fiber cement siding. It looks as good as traditional cedar siding, but it is easier to maintain and more durable.
- Landscape. Maximize the curb appeal of your house with a well-tended lawn and an attractive, well-maintained mixture of trees, shrubs and flowers.
